Handmade Tile Tips
Our clay body is a unique stoneware that is very non-porous and extremely durable. Our tiles can be used outdoors even under freeze/thaw conditions.
Because our tile is made by hand, by real people, no two tiles are exactly alike. The time you take for prep and placement will greatly impact the success of the finished result. We suggest planning your layout, pre-sorting the tiles by size and color variation, and strategically blending the tiles for a cohesive look.
Color and Glaze Variation
We glaze all of our tiles by hand too! Expect variation in hue and tones. We will gladly send you samples that will show the variation you can expect.
Our tile shrinks about 13% from the beginning of the process to the final finished product. Shrinkage is not an exact science and slight variations in the length and width of the individual tiles can occur. You can expect a size variation of +/- 1/16”.
Because clay is an elastic material, it will attempt to return to it’s original shape. Any movement in the production process (and there is a lot!) can cause undulation as the clay struggles with its new shape. It can be anything from a raised corner to a bow in the middle. Expecting undulation with help the installer select the right tools for installation. A deeper notched trowel for thinset will help set the tiles level.
There are very many brands of setting materials available. Our tile is a stoneware tile with an absorption rate of less than 3%. Please use a quality thinset mortar used for installing tiles with a low porosity.
We recommend a minimum of 1/8” grout spacing. Larger grout joints may be used for larger tiles or for more room to adjust for size variations. Don’t rely on one size spacer. Shims may be needed to maintain level lines throughout the installation.
We recommend the use of a high-quality wet saw equipped with a smooth-rim, diamond blade.
It is especially important for our matte glazes to be sealed. Our tile has an extremely low absorption rate, however certain foods can stain the glaze surface of some of our matte glazes making them difficult to clean. It is always recommended to seal the grout.
Our standard lead time is between 4 – 6 weeks. Custom tiles may require more time.
